Spa Garden

The owners of this 320 sq m garden were building a new garden house containing a gym at the end of the garden and wanted to have a spa pool to complement it. They also wanted to replace their very traditional garden with a more contemporary style space with a large lawn, planting beds and really generous terrace area off the living rooms of their large house.

Charlotte Rowe Garden Design created a two-level limestone paved terrace area incorporating an outdoor kitchen with a stainless-steel BBQ and black basalt worktop, a large outdoor dining area and a really comfortable sitting area with all-year sofas and coffee tables. The two areas are separated by flat top London Plane trees to provide shade and wide under-lit stairs up to the lawn with limestone stepping stones leading to the in-ground spa which has dark glass mosaic tiles.

The spa area is given a sense of enclosure by tall pleached pear trees and is bordered by a long polished render bench and Mediterranean planting including lavender, agapanthus, sedum and Erigeron karvaniskanus.

The gym is surrounded by cedar decking and is cleverly lit like the rest of the garden to create drama and warmth all round the year. The rest of the planting includes existing Prunus and Ilex trees complemented by new trees and shrubs including Prunus serrula, Ceanothus, Ligustrum jonandrum and Prunus lusitanica, mixed with perennials, subshrubs and bulbs.
