Somerset

This 1½ acre garden was created within a former working farmyard and outbuildings of a farm in Somerset. The original 17th-century farmhouse built in local Somerset stone and some of the original stables and farm buildings were being transformed into a six-bedroom family house. Outbuildings were taken down to create a large area between the house and the existing swimming pool, ideal for a walled garden.

Charlotte Rowe Garden Design was commissioned to design and re-landscape the whole site including the walled garden, a potager/vegetable garden, an orchard, a new drive, car parking areas and the wider landscape. Some of the terrain was quite badly contaminated and uncared for making planting the area around the house very difficult.

In the new design, the swimming pool is flanked by low level planting on three sides with a raised terrace and a pool pavilion on the North side. The walled garden also has a formal lawn and three terrace areas and views down to the fields and the mill across the new ha-ha. The areas around the house itself have gravel planting to soften the profile using perennials and grasses.

The potager has been placed to the North towards the existing farm buildings and is nestled amongst a nuttery, winter garden and orc; hard. The drive has been formalised with new trees and verge planting of wild flowers and bulbs leading to a newly created parking area surrounded by wildflower meadows.
