New Forest
A former client found her perfect house in the New Forest in Hampshire and asked Charlotte Rowe Garden Design to create a country garden for her new 1½ acre property. The low thatched house with thick lime-washed walls is set in the centre of the property within the national park, with wonderful views across to the South East. The brief was to re-configure the terrace and main lawn to the rear of the house, build an outdoor swimming pool, create front planting beds and put in some garden lighting.
Charlotte Rowe designed a long broad terrace to the rear of the house to provide enough space for a seating area, a dining and BBQ area as well as a small private terrace off the study. Joining the two areas is a wide path with two square timber arches and gravel planting including ground cover planting wild strawberries and herbs. The rear terrace is laid with long narrow strips of Yorkstone paving of differing widths to give some formality and structure to the terrace and to lead one’s eye along the back façade of the house. Set into the paving at one end are two square planting beds with lavender and clipped Buxus.
There are new wide stone stairs up to the main lawn with a grass path leading to the pool set between planting beds planted with perennials and grasses and a row of lime trees.
The planting throughout is a mixture of large shrubs, perennials in a muted lilac, shady pink and cream palette as well as grasses and bulbs.
