Another favourite garden - Wimbledon East
Our clients had a mature 600 sqm East-facing garden behind their house in Wimbledon. However, they decided to replace their 1920s house with a new contemporary-style house and at the same time decided to reconfigure the garden totally. A key design brief was to remove a tall mature hedge halfway down, but keep the small vegetable garden and garden shed and, as our client is a keen gardener, have a large amount of seasonal planting.
We decided to keep the principal area as lawn with a long gravel path down one side and wide generous planting borders with perennial planting on both sides. Close to the house we created a large terrace of polished concrete and placed a fireplace close to the house.
To maintain the original shape of the garden with two areas of lawn, we replaced the overgrown hedge with a small secondary terrace, layers of hedging in Buxus and Carpinus betulus and pleached trees. Beyond this is a double row of lavender bordering a path leading to a less formal ‘winter garden’ with shade-tolerant planting which is separated from the rest of the garden by yew hedging.
Existing trees including a very large mature eucalyptus and a lovely apple tree are up-lit and new specimen trees were planted to provide future shade. Subtle lighting has been used throughout the garden.
