Moroccan courtyard in California
Our clients had been to Morocco and loved it. They asked Charlotte Rowe to design a traditional Moroccan courtyard for their new house in California. The courtyard is at the heart of the house all main reception rooms lead off it and it can be viewed from both the ground and first floors of the house. It was a challenging space due to the number of large access doors and a spiral staircase leading up to the top roofs. It also needed to be an oasis of calm.
Our solution was to place at the centre of the space a shallow water basin at the middle with a traditional fountain in the middle clad with deep blue Zellig tiles and integrated lighting to give a magical feel at night. The rest of the space is devoted to lush planting including plumbago, gardenia and bougainvillea weaving in amongst benches and urns. Some lighting is included in the design but additional Moroccan style lamps will also be used to give extra interest.
