Charlotte Rowe Garden Design was asked to create a new garden for a lovely farmhouse and adjoining cottage in Anglesey. The site, which faces Mount Snowdon and the Menai Straits, has its challenges, not least the salty winds which prevail in that part of Wales.
The owner wanted a country garden without too much maintenance and with some contemporary elements, in particular around the main house and cottage. In our design masterplan we created a contemporary style courtyard garden nesteled against the farmhouse and the newly-built extension. Here we placed a water rill, which took advantage of the stepped levels, and surrounded it with polished concrete floors which continued into the kitchen and dining room and across to the other side of the house where it continues into the outdoor dining area.
Beyond the dining terrace, we created a grid garden with tall grasses and perennials and a small seating area within the old walled garden of the farmhouse. To the East, in front of the farmhouse, is the main garden area which has been contoured to echo the surrounding landscape using insets of stone within the land and mown lawn paths set into meadow planting. Beyond the cottage is a separate garden leading to an area which will eventually house a potager/vegetable and fruit garden.
The garden is currently being landscaped and planted.
